With just over two weeks to go to the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, a slate of live music events have been announced as part of the entertainment taking place around the month-long tournament.

Leading the charge is Cool Britannia, a Cape Town-based event that runs the full-length of the tournament (June 11 to July 11) and is based out of the Cape Town International Convention Centre, just a few kilometers away from the newly built Cape Town Stadium.

Headlining Cool Britannia is Dizzee Rascal, who makes his live South African debut at the event on June 16. He is joined by Fatboy Slim who plays the event on June 18 while South African township rock band Reburth, Cape Town electronica act Good Luck, and Mozambican Afro-dub outfit 340ml are among the local acts named to the bill.

Cool Britannia also features a strong line-up of top-drawer South African DJs including DJ Fresh, Euphonik, Roger Goode, Black Coffee, Tbo Touch, Milkshake, Crazy White Boy and Dean Fuel.

“We’re excited to be part of Cape Town’s big world party, and will be marking the occasion with a number of firsts,” said Cool Britannia managing director Conor Nolan. “Dizzee Rascal can’t wait to play his first African gig, and given the response of 150,000 fans in Glastonbury last year, his live show will put shivers down your spine.”

Also using live music as the jump-off point are the FIFA Fan Fests that are being held in each of the nine host cities.

Along with Afro-folk duo Blk Sonshine and indie rockers Desmond and the Tutus, BLK JKS, a South African rock outfit signed to U.S. indie Secretly Canadian, is among the acts to play Johannesburg’s FIFA Fan Fest in Newtown.

BLK JKS also plays the Kick-Off Celebration Concert on June 10 at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg. R&B artist Loyiso Bala, hip-hop solo artist Tumi Molekane, 340ml, Afro-soul group Kwani Experience, and Afro-folk singer-songwiter Steadyrock! were all added to the concert’s line-up.

International acts John Legend, Black Eyes Peas, Shakira and Alicia Keys were already confirmed for the line-up.
